Kindle Scribe 2 review in progress: Is slightly useful AI worth the extra cash?
It's an analog ache that is oddly satisfying in a nostalgic way. In the last few days, I've held a pen and written more words for a much longer time than I have ever done in years. As I pushed myself to handwrite large parts of this review to spend more time with the 2024 Kindle Scribe's stylus and note-taking tools, I started to feel a sensation I hadn't remembered since my teens. I often feel the urge to jot down thoughts and lists, but I never really wanted to spend longer than 15 minutes writing. And yet, Amazon's new AI features for the Kindle Scribe seem to cater more to those who labor over essays or missives that they ultimately need to share with others.
Why Go With an Evil-Looking Orb?
In the past year or so, since the public release of OpenAI's ChatGPT, people have been making their peace with the idea that an omnipotent AI might be on the horizon. Sam Altman, the company's CEO, "believes that people need time to reckon with the idea that we may soon share Earth with a powerful new intelligence, before it remakes everything from work to human relationships," my colleague Ross Andersen reported after the two had several conversations. "ChatGPT was a way of serving notice." But OpenAI isn't Altman's only project, and it's not even his only project with ambitions to change the world. He is also a co-founder of a company called Tools for Humanity, which has the lofty goal of protecting people from the economic devastation that may arise from AI taking human jobs. The company's first major project is Worldcoin, which uses an evil-looking metallic orb--called the Orb--to take eyeball scans from people all over the world.

Why em Soylent Green /em Got 2022 So Wrong
I should like the 1973 film Soylent Green. Actually, I should love it. The movie deals with issues that are even more important now than they were 50 years ago. And as someone who's spent plenty of time exploring the connections between sci-fi films, technology innovation, and the future, I feel a certain professional obligation to sing its praises. Instead, though, I find myself frustrated by the movie and its hyperbolic and naive handling of complex themes.

Robotic Legs Help 7-Ton Primary School Walk to Its New Location – IAM Network
It's not every day that you get to see a building walk on its own robotic legs, but here's one of those rare occasions. Authorities in Shanghai, China moved a 7-ton building to a new location by propping it up on robotic legs. This is relatively new technology developed in 2018 and it's being used as an alternative to the traditional way of relocating a building, which involves using side rails or flatbeds. Because the 1935-built Lagena Primary School had to go in order to make room for a new shopping center, authorities decided that, instead of tearing it down, they should move it. The shape of the building posed the biggest challenge, since it meant the traditional way couldn't be used, SCMP reports, as you can see in the video below.
Tesla's Autopilot may make room for cars entering your lane
Tesla's Autopilot system can ease some of the burden of driving, but it's not always polite (just ask anyone who's been cut off). Now, however, it appears to be learning some added manners. After a couple of weeks of off-hand reports, drivers now believe that Autopilot cedes the right of way when it detects that a car up ahead wants to switch into your lane. If a vehicle is making its intentions clear, Autopilot appears to make that car stand out on your instrument cluster and slow down to create a space. It's not certain what Tesla's technology is looking for (most likely the signal lights), but it seems to work just like what you'd expect from a courteous driver.
Dear Bankers, Make Room for Artificial Intelligence in the Future
Technology has infiltrated our lives, and the wave of digital disruption has impacted various industries. The finance sector is no exception. Since the industry is becoming more complex, relying on traditional methods is no longer enough. In fact, it can do your business more harm than good. To make the sector more efficient, financial technology, or Fintech, provides financial institutions and professionals with new tools to handle some of the most complex tasks.

Make room for AI for mobile in the future
This transition will not be quick or easy, however. Many phones today have some rudimentary AI hardware, but for compute- and memory-intensive AI powered by machine learning (ML), back-end services will need to run in the cloud. Also, the algorithms that will be incorporated into the devices to run on AI subprocessors still need work, particularly if they are to enable the extension of existing programs and processes, such as ERP systems or personal productivity apps. Many hope to move ML to the device itself, but I expect that it will be impractical to acquire the necessary resources to accomplish that other than for very simple processes. It will be easier for companies that use SaaS applications to deploy smart apps than organizations that exclusively use on-premises apps that need to identify and deploy the proper APIs to the new ML services.
